MORE THAN ONE WORLD: New Japanese Photography 50 Years On marks 50 years since New Japanese Photography, the 1974 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Curated by John Szarkowski and Shoji Yamagishi, that show introduced Japanese photographers abroad on a large scale for the first time and shaped how Japanese photography has been studied and valued in the West ever since. Published by Akaaka Art Publishing in 2025.
The story behind the book
The book grew out of exhibitions and a symposium at T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO 2024. Fifteen curators, critics and researchers from Japan and abroad reconsider the exhibition's historical meaning, bring in viewpoints it overlooked, such as the absence of women photographers, and widen the discussion to a global view and to photography after the internet.
The title takes up Szarkowski's words that there is "more than one world".
