Something Vibrant is a photobook by Su Hou-Wen, an emerging photographer from Taiwan. For about ten years, from 2014 to 2023, he photographed along the rivers of the area where he lives. Published by Akaaka Art Publishing in 2024.
The story behind the book
The idea came after he moved to Ankeng in Xindian, New Taipei City. From upstream to downstream, he followed the shifting landforms the river creates, the life of plants and animals, and people's ties to the water. By the river, everything is in the middle of change, as if crossing back and forth over an invisible bank.
In ancient times, Su writes, people and rivers were inseparable, but for city dwellers today rivers have become places for leisure. Walking wherever he pleased, he found that the people and scenes he recorded became metaphors that revealed something strange beneath ordinary life.
