The Garden of The Camellia (Tsubaki no Niwa) is a photobook born from the first feature film by photographer Yoshihiko Ueda, who wrote, directed and shot it himself. Published by Akaaka Art Publishing in 2020 and reprinted in May 2024.
The story behind the book
The film is set in a house overlooking the sea, with a garden of swaying flowers. Ueda built it on a theme he had held for many years. For the book, he cut images from the film and arranged them with a few words, so that they drift a little away from the story and carry their own breath and time.
The loss and memory each person carries, and the small gestures of daily life beside the garden, move with the seasons toward life and toward death.
