Yoyogi Park, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo is the first photobook by Yosuke Morimoto. Photographs taken between 2006 and 2023 run in sequence like frames of film: portraits of women he met by chance in Tokyo, and the places where he met them. Published by Akaaka Art Publishing in 2023.
The story behind the book
It began when Morimoto asked a woman standing alone in Yoyogi Park if he could take her portrait. A forest in the middle of the city, and one person half hidden in it. Later he left the park and kept meeting people hidden in the forest of the city, photographing each portrait together with the landscape of that spot.
In his afterword he recalls that a sad expression appeared when he developed the film, and that the look women show when photographed by a stranger reminded him of the look of someone at the end of a relationship. Some asked him, "Are you sure it should be me?"
