Small Miracles (Fushigi na Chikara) is a photobook by Rika Noguchi, published for her solo exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. It brings together 30 years of her photographs and films, from early series to new work. Published by Akaaka Art Publishing in 2022.
The story behind the book
Noguchi first made work about people's relationship with unknown places: underwater, high altitudes and space. More recently she has explored the many small mysteries found in daily life. The book is arranged so that past and new series echo each other, from the early Diving Man (1995) and To the Night Stars (2014, 2015) to her newest series Palm Trees (2022).
It also includes My Father's Album (2014), prints Noguchi made from negatives her late father left behind. That work led her to ask again why people take photographs.
